Masashi "Jumbo" Ozaki was born in Tokushima Prefecture in 1947. Ozaki became a professional golfer in 1970 and won his first all-Japan Pro championship in 1971, a year in which he won five tournaments. He was the top prize money winner in Japanese golf 12 times, the first time in 1973, five times in a row from 1994 to 1998. He and his rivals Isao Aoki and Tsuneyuki Nakajima were the pillars of the glorious era in Japanese golf named after them: the AON era. Always a leader in Japanese golf, Ozaki played in the Masters 18 times, coming in eighth in 1973. With 113 victories to his credit, his win at 55 years and seven months made him the oldest player to win a title on the Japanese pro tour. Last year he played in the Mandom Lucid Open, his 1000th tournament. With power and technique to match his younger rivals, he is widely admired by both professional and amateur golfers.
